How to Stay Fit and Healthy

A healthy diet and exercise is the best way to keep your family healthy and fit. Get the kids away from the TV and take them on a walk around the neighborhood or to the park. Make it a family habit and you will all be happier, healthier and fit.

If you find you need to lose weight you may need to cut out more calories. Most people have only a hazy idea of what a single portion should look like. It’s a good idea to measure until you can judge by eyeballing the portion. I have here the foods,calories, and portion sizes the male and female needs for better health. If you are over weight, active, and follow these guide lines you should lose any excess weight.

Most average, active, males need about 2,600 calories a day. The following foods with the correct amounts are what he needs to eat in a day

Grains; 9 ounces

Vegetables; 4 cups

Fruit; 4 cups

Milk; 3 cups

Meat and beans; 6.5 ounces

Fats/oils; 8 teaspoons

Most average active females need about 2,000 calories a day. The following foods with the correct amounts are what she needs to eat in a day.

Grains; 6 ounces

Vegetables; 2 1/2 cups

Fruit; 2 cups

Milk; 3 cups

Meat and beans; 5.5 ounces

Fats/oils: 6 teaspoons

Here is how to visualize your portions.

Hard cheese; 1 ounce equals three dice.

Cooked pasta or rice; 1 cup equals the size of a baseball.

Vegetables, berries, or fruit; 1 cup equals the size of a baseball.

Pancake/waffle; 4 inches equals the size of a CD.

Meat or poultry; 3 ounces equals the size of a deck of cards.

Salad dressing; 2 tablespoons equals a shot glass.

Cheese slice, or deli meat; 1 ounce equals size of CD.

Nuts, dried fruit, granola; 1/4 cup equals the size of a golf ball.

When you go into a restaurant and you don’t know the serving sizes, Take a look at the other tables and if the portions are large, have them put half in a take home box, before they bring your food to the table. That way you won’t be tempted to eat more than you should, and the food you take home won’t be picked over.

Remember that a serving of olive oil has just as many calories as a serving of butter, so even though olive oil is heart healthy, you can’t have more.

Exercise will help you stay healthy and get in shape. Walking is one of the easiest and most enjoyable exercises you can do. It doesn’t take any equipment and you can take a camera along to take pictures of any interesting happenings. Take hubbie and the kids to the park and have a fun walk. Keep eating a healthy diet, exercising, and don’t give up. With perseverance and determination you will reach your goal.

How to stay fit without going to the gym

You do not need Rock Hard Abs or Bulging Muscles to be fit. And you don’t need a personal exercise trainer or live your life around exercising. People do need to reset their minds in to getting in shape in a smart sensible way…unless they choose to live at a GYM.

If you look around your house you will see many ways to stay fit if you just put a little effort into everyday things. Run if usually walk. Walk if you usually drive. (Like to the mailbox or taking the trash out)

Staying fit has to be a goal. You have to change the way you think and how you act. If you want to stay fit it has to be a real personal goal. You have to be serious about getting fit. You cannot just say that you are going to get fit and then start losing weight. Getting in shape takes real commitment. If you are serious about getting in shape and staying fit then you need to make a plan.

Losing weight isn’t easy. It has taken you years to build up the fat; it will take a few months to get it off. You actually should be glad you can’t just drop 50 pounds. If you lose weight too fast then you will actually make permanent stretch marks.

One thing you can do is the watching the T.V. exercise. No, this is not a remote control of beer can curl. I mean that every time a commercial comes on I want you doing a set of 15 set ups, jogging in place, 15 pushups, or getting a light pair of dumb bells and curling them. How many hours in a week do you think you waste watching T.V. COMMERCIALS. Come on, convert this into useful time.

When you walk to another part of the house, do it with meaning. Jog up the stairs. Go around the long way. Jump a little. This will not only make you feel more healthy, but you will feel younger and overall more content with life because you are having fun.

When you park in the parking lot, park way in the back. The only exception to this is if you are a woman in your 20s. Then this is probably not safe unless you are in a small town or a rich community. This will save you time looking for a parking spot and give you exercise at the same time. Who knows, you may even get a tad bit of sun.

I know that you are doing all the stuff now. But you STILL have to set 30 minuets 4 times a week out to do concentrated exercise. If you don’t have a tread mill or some other cardio equipment, then get a tape and do a 30 minuet exercise in your living room.

Remember that all exercise is, is movement. Keep moving during the day. Don’t sit for hours at a time. Get you a jump rope and some perfect pushups. Take your dog for a jog that last 10 minutes, (you know he/she would love that).

Remember that you are not striving for perfection. You are looking for improvement. You need to make goals but remember that goals are not made for you to actually hit. Goals are made to push you.

The most important thing for you to do is get encouragement. If you are married, get your spouse into it with you. It will make you work even harder if you get a compliment. Don’t be so hard on yourself and enjoy what you do. If there is something you really don’t enjoy, stop it and find something you do enjoy. For the most part it will be hard to begin with, stick in there and you will see the results you want sooner than you know.

However  Gym membership is expensive and for a start we are all shelling out well needed cash on the gym when you don’t need to at all. After all getting fit can be done without shelling out the cash. Because at the end of the day  as you get slimmer and toned so will your wallet or purse.  You can get fit without  the hassles of a gym membership and the added cost in these simple but very effective ways: 

Simple exercises:   Some really simple exercises can be done at home or work. Exercises such as stair runs where you run up and down the stairs until your heart starts beating really fast is meant to be a cardiovascular exercise. Other simple exercises such as push ups, press ups, pull ups , jogging ,power-walking and brisk walking can also help out with CV(Cardiovascular) exercise.
Cut it out:  You don’t have to stop your gym subscription completely as most gyms offer a pay as you go system where you pay for use of the gym and its facilities on an “as and when you use it”  basis. So you only pay when you use it. 
The old Switcheroo: Instead of a costly gym subscription  you can instead use  your local community public leisure centre or swimming baths where you can use their “gym” facilities for as little as or (£5 in the U.K)  a month or even as little as or (£3 in the U.K) each time you use it and children and elderly people get to swim free!!!!   These places are much better than the local Gold’s Gym , Canons or Virgin Active. This option would be the best as if you go off to a leisure centre or swimming baths you  could still enjoy the social aspects that you get along with the gym. As probably most people tend to go to the gym for  the buzz they get from just “going along to the gym and pumping lead” , the social aspect also falls into place with this. 
TV….TV…TV…TV :  Television can do it’s part  in our physical state and not just in assisting us in vegetating on the sofa in front of it  with a large bucket of snacks but there are many workout , aerobics, fitness, exercise, ab crunches and Pilates shows on the T.V on many channels in both the U.K and U.S.A and probably everywhere in the world. Such shows can especially found on the style network, Diva T.V , Sky real lives , Discovery Home and Health and other channels on  the digital , cable and satellite  television. So it just goes to show shoving yourself in front of the T.V doesn’t just give you love handles and those terribly somewhat depressing  old flabby babby bacon rolls  that we all  try to avoid.  There are many good DVD’S for sale to do with fitness from the likes of people such as Jane Fonda, Davina Mcall and Claire King. For these at good prices try Amazon either from the actual retailer site itself or sellers on the site under Amazon Marketplace as the second hand copies can be much cheaper and in pretty good condition even new.
